The Silent Hills by Derek Thompson

The Silent Hills by Derek Thompson

Fellow West-Country-based writer, Derek Thompson has just had his short story, The Silent Hills published by Musa Publishing. I haven't had the pleasure of reading it yet - it's on my to do list with How To Be a Woman and A Hole in the World. To satisfy my short term curiosity, I've interviewed Thompson about the book.

1. What is The Silent Hills about?

It's about a man who has spent years running from his past, himself and the truth. The Silent Hills also look at motives, consequences and the nature of justice.

2. Who is it aimed at?

Anyone who enjoys suspense stories and thrillers. Also woven into the tale is a love story, a chance at redemption, an unpunished crime, a man who disappeared and a woman who neither forgot nor forgave. Not bad for 5200 words!

3. What inspired you to write it?

I was on a long train journey from my regular train from Cornwall to London for work. I closed my eyes and listened to the voice, interrupting the flow only to get everything down on paper. The more I listened, the more I wanted to know how it all ended.

4. Is it your usual style?

I tend to be led by character and voice, as they determine dialogue and actions. All that we do is a consequence of who we are. I write across a range of genres, so I don't always know what a story is until it's nearly completed.

5. What can your readers look forward to in the future?

(Rubs hands together gleefully.) Lots of good things. I plan to have other short fiction ebooks for Musa, across a range of genres. Then there are the novels: Standpoint and Line of Sight - two contemporary British thrillers, Covenant - a mystical fantasy epic, and Scars & Stripes - a semi-autobiographical comic tragedy about living in the US for a year in the late 1980s.

For more info see The Silent Hills at the Musa Publishing.

You can also find Derek's collection of comedy sketch scripts, The Showreel Sketchbook, available from the Smashwords website.
