I've reviewed "Fake Kate" by David Wailing

A few weeks back, I downloaded two interesting-sounding novels by David Wailing - Fake Kate and Bang (Memoirs of a Relationship Assassin). So, when I found out that David was reading my novel, Straight Out of University, I decided to get started on Fake Kate because I enjoyed the symmetry. However, we made a pact not to review each other's books until we had both finished reading.

Today was chosen for simultaneous review posting. This was much more terrifying than I imagined. Waiting to read a new review always interferes with my respiratory function but knowing it would be written by a writer that I now admire, was even more frightening.

Not only that, but I've exchanged messages with David Wailing. He therefore feels much more "real" than a random author. Reviewing a stranger's book is one thing. Reviewing a book by somebody that you "know" requires much more diplomacy.

A whole variety of neuroses skipped into my head, "What if I praise his book and he hates mine?" "What if I criticise his book and his raves about mine?" In the end, I came to the only logical conclusion - be honest.

Here's a snippet from my review:

The first half of the book takes you through a series of dates where, as the blurb suggests, Belinda pretends to be her illustrious sister Kate. She meets some interesting characters, ranging from terrifying to hilarious. I was just thinking, "Well, this is a jolly entertaining romantic comedy," when suddenly it morphed into an outstanding psychological thriller!
